Dolby Vision is a premium HDR (high dynamic range) format developed by Dolby Laboratories that tells a display, scene by scene or even frame by frame, exactly how to render brightness, contrast, and color. Content makers master their material in the format, and Dolby Vision combines 12-bit color depth with intelligence that maximizes each display's performance. Its dynamic metadata maps every image to the TV's capabilities, whereas static metadata in generic HDR is set once for the entire piece of content and cannot adjust for your display. Introduced in 2014, it was the first HDR format available on the market.
How It Works: Dynamic Metadata
All HDR video carries metadata describing how it was mastered. The difference is granularity. HDR10 defines static metadata for the entire video, such as maximum and average luminance and mastering display information, while Dolby Vision metadata is dynamic and can be specified per shot, per scene, or per frame, carrying more information than HDR10 metadata. The dynamic metadata layer is standardized as SMPTE ST 2094-10 (the Dolby format), on top of a PQ transfer function and the wide-gamut Rec. 2020 color container.
Why this matters in practice: no consumer TV can hit the 4,000 to 10,000-nit peaks used on mastering monitors, so every display must tone-map. With static metadata, one compromise curve covers the whole movie. With dynamic metadata, tone mapping preserves more contrast in both the dark and bright parts of the image, and the benefit is largest on less capable displays, which is exactly the mid-range panel segment most consumers own.
Dolby Vision vs. HDR10 and HDR10+
- HDR10: the open, royalty-free baseline. 10-bit, static metadata, supported by effectively every HDR display. Every Dolby Vision title also carries an HDR10 base layer for compatibility.
- HDR10+: the Samsung-backed open alternative that adds dynamic metadata to HDR10.
- Dolby Vision: proprietary, licensed, with a 12-bit pipeline and a mandatory certification workflow. From a manufacturing standpoint, this is the key difference: shipping a Dolby Vision display means licensing fees, Dolby-approved tone-mapping implementation on the SoC, and golden-reference calibration targets verified during factory tuning, which is why some budget brands ship HDR10+ only.

Dolby Vision 2: The Next Generation
The format is currently in transition. Dolby announced Dolby Vision 2 on September 2, 2025, describing it as an evolution beyond HDR built on a new Dolby Image Engine and Content Intelligence, offered in two tiers: standard Dolby Vision 2 for mainstream TVs and Dolby Vision 2 Max for the highest-performing displays, including Authentic Motion, a creative-driven shot-by-shot motion control tool. At CES 2026, Dolby confirmed select Hisense, TCL, and Philips TVs as the first to support it in 2026. Two practical caveats for buyers: all announced Dolby Vision 2 TVs will require a software update to enable it, and no Dolby Vision 2 content is available yet, with LG opting out of its 2026 lineup and Samsung continuing to skip Dolby Vision entirely.
Why Dolby Vision Matters in Real-World Engineering
- Tone mapping is where formats win or lose. Dolby Vision moves tone-mapping decisions from the TV maker's guesswork to the colorist's intent, enforced by Dolby's certification, which is why the same panel can look noticeably different playing DV versus HDR10 content.
- The whole chain must speak it. Like HDCP, Dolby Vision only works end to end: the content, the source device, and the display all need support, and the handshake rides on the same EDID and InfoFrame signaling.
- Certification is a production line item. DV compliance adds panel characterization, per-model golden reference files, and Dolby review to the factory calibration process, a real cost that explains its positioning as a premium tier.
Bottom line: Dolby Vision is HDR with a brain, using per-scene dynamic metadata and enforced calibration so that what the colorist saw is what your panel shows, within its physical limits. HDR10 is the universal floor; Dolby Vision is the curated ceiling, and with Dolby Vision 2 rolling out through 2026, that ceiling is about to rise again.
