What Is HDMI ARC and eARC?

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the dominant digital connector standard for carrying video and audio together over a single cable, from a source (laptop, console, streaming box) to a display or audio system. Introduced in 2002 to replace the tangle of analog cables, it is now managed by the HDMI Forum, the industry body that develops the specification, with licensing handled by HDMI Licensing Administrator.

The version number matters more than the port shape, because the connector has stayed the same while bandwidth has exploded:

  1. HDMI 1.4 (2009): brought 4K at 30Hz, an Ethernet channel, and introduced ARC.
  2. HDMI 2.0 (2013): 18Gbps, enabling 4K at 60Hz.
  3. HDMI 2.1 (2017): 48Gbps over Ultra High Speed cables, enabling 4K 120Hz, 8K, VRR (variable refresh rate), and eARC.
  4. HDMI 2.2 (2025): the current specification. Released by the HDMI Forum on June 25, 2025, it delivers 96Gbps bandwidth with next-gen Fixed Rate Link technology, supporting resolutions up to 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz, plus uncompressed full-chroma formats like 8K@60 4:4:4 and 4K@240 4:4:4 at 10-bit and 12-bit color. The new Ultra96 HDMI Cable supports the full 96Gbps, while the Ultra High Speed cable from the HDMI 2.1 era remains valid for setups up to 48Gbps.

From an engineering perspective, HDMI is really three systems in one cable: the TMDS/FRL high-speed video lanes, the DDC channel that carries EDID and HDCP handshakes, and the CEC line that lets devices control each other. That third, low-speed wiring is also what makes ARC and eARC possible.

What Is HDMI ARC?

ARC (Audio Return Channel) lets audio flow "backwards" through an HDMI connection. ARC was introduced as part of the HDMI 1.4 specification and allows two-way travel of audio data over an HDMI cable to and from a TV, whereas a standard pre-ARC HDMI port only carries audio and video one way, from source to display.

The practical win: your streaming apps run on the TV itself, and the TV sends that audio back down the same HDMI cable to a soundbar or AV receiver. One cable, no separate optical line. The limitation is bandwidth. ARC was never designed for more than about 1Mbps, so it handles compressed formats like Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1, but not lossless audio. In field terms, ARC is roughly an optical (TOSLINK) replacement with the added convenience of CEC volume control from one remote.

What Is HDMI eARC?

eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) is the fix for everything ARC couldn't do. Introduced in the HDMI 2.1 specification, it works the same way as ARC but with much higher audio bandwidth, allowing higher-quality surround formats. Specifically:

  1. Bandwidth: eARC allows up to 37Mbps for the return channel, versus ARC's roughly 1Mbps.
  2. Formats: it supports high-bitrate audio up to 192kHz 24-bit, uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1, and object-based formats including Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X.
  3. Lip sync: eARC includes an automated lip-sync feature, so audio delay is negotiated automatically instead of being dialed in manually.

One production-side note: eARC runs on repurposed pins with its own data link, so a TV cannot gain eARC through a simple firmware update unless the silicon already supports it, a situation very similar to the HDCP 2.2 hardware requirement. Cable-wise, an Ultra High Speed or certified High Speed with Ethernet cable is the safe choice, since eARC uses the wire pair older budget cables sometimes omitted.

Bottom line: HDMI is the umbrella standard moving video and audio in one cable; ARC lets that cable also carry TV audio back out to a sound system in compressed form; eARC does the same at up to 37Mbps, unlocking lossless Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. For anyone buying a soundbar or receiver in 2026, eARC support on both the TV and audio device is the spec to verify first.
